Level Up Gateway November Dev Update

We’ve spent the past month getting the remaining Adventurer’s Guide classes: Bard, Ranger, Druid, Herald and Warlock up to level 5 filling out the roster as well as adding death saves, missing Combat Maneuvers and Cultures.

Classes

We’ve hit a big milestone by getting every class up to level 5 so that testers can cover the first tier of play with any selection they want. With foundations for martials and casters already in place these classes have come along faster than the previous ones, a good sign for the remaining levels. A few classes needed special consideration and new features. The Bard’s Battle Hymns for example we had to add to magic tab along with some rules and your Bardic Inspiration uses.

And we added a special indicator for skills with half proficiency:

The Herald’s Lay On Hands ability allows for so many uses we had to come up with a better way of showing these use pools than with checkboxes like in other cases.

Lastly, the Warlock posed some of the biggest challenges to implementation. To start with, the Warlock’s spellcasting ability can be picked from INT, CHA or WIS making a foundational part of the character sheet variable.

Next the Pact of the Blade Warlock’s pact weapon uses your spellcasting ability for hit and damage rolls, modifying that weapon’s action based on your choice of spellcasting ability. In addition, if the weapon has bonuses to hit or damage, those bonuses are also applied to the warlock’s available Eldritch Blasts.

The end result however makes managing and tracking these intricacies a breeze for Warlock players.

Cultures

We have now implemented all 35 Adventurer’s Guide cultures, a staggering amount to pick from each granting very different perks and abilities. Cultures are all so different, the Steamforged culture for example adds a maneuver to your character you can use between rests but doesn’t cost exertion:

And the Mustbairn Halfling feature grants a character the ability to cast augury once between long rests by submerging hands or feet into the mud:

Death Saves

Death saves are some of the most dramatic moments around the table, now when a character’s health reaches 0 you will be able to open the Death Saving Throws panel to track successes and failures.

Things To Come

We’re working hard on getting everything we need done for early testing to start. In the coming month we’re going to be looking at items, reworking some elements of the inventory system to make adding custom items more flexible and to support Level Up’s Armor and Weapon materials better.

We also plan to implement a feature for managing mounts, beasts, familiars and wild shapes to make looking up those stats easier and to track hit points for other creatures. We’ll also look into integrating Wild Shape closely to let the sheet show the beast’s stats while in wild shape.

We’re very excited for all of this to come together and to start inviting early testers to try out Gateway as soon as everything is in place!
