Building A Character On Level Up Gateway

With development on Level Up Gateway well under development, here’s a short ‘walkthrough’ as we make a new character.

This platform is a work-in-progress, so what you’re seeing here is an early development build. Expect things to change before release!

This page shows your current characters. Right now it says “Level 1 Dwarf, Caravanner, Acolyte, Chaos” but that will be formatted a bit more cleanly in the final product. We hit the “New Character” button at the top right.

On this page, we set some basics—character name, portrait, choose a dice set, and set the XP setting (depending whether they level up via XP or milestone levelling).

We now select a heritage. We’re going to go with dragonborn for this one.

We then select any heritage options, including our heritage gift.

Time to choose our culture. We’ve only coded a couple of those so far, so let’s go with circusfolk.

Here’s the circusfolk culture page. We don’t have to make any selections here, but sometimes a culture might include a choice of proficiencies, languages, or special features.

Time to pick a background. Let’s say Ingera was an artisan in that circusfolk culture.

The artisan background gives us a few quick choices to make.

Scrolling down the same page, we also roll or select our connection and memento.

Next we choose our destiny. Let’s make Ingera an agent of chaos!

No choices to make here, so we quickly check the features of the chaos destiny before continuing.

Ability score time! Let’s roll randomly, for fun and… well, chaos!

Rolling our stats…. love the animated dice! They make a satisfying clickey sound!

It’s not a great set of stats, but we’ll roll with it (pun intended).

OK, level 1, we need to pick our class. As a circusfolk artisan, this has to be a bard, right?

Making all our bard choices! Lower down there’s battle hymns and spell casting.

We need equipment! We can choose one or more suggested packages. Of course, we could always just buy equipment a la carte but we haven’t coded that bit yet! So we’ll just choose the agitator’s set and some brewers’ supplies.

Here’s our starting equipment. We’ll equip the armor and crossbow. We have 4 gold left, it seems!

Spell selection! We’ll pick a few useful looking spells.

And we need to select our bardic battle hymn, too!

And let’s take a look at our new character’s character sheet! Anywhere you see a die roll noted, you can click on it to roll your ability checks, damage, attack roll, and so on.

With the spells tab selected.

Our inventory!

Various features!

The notes tab is still being worked on, but you can see where various character details will appear.

Of course, it’s not just a static sheet—it’s designed to be used during play. This is what happens when we click on ‘Long Rest’.

So that’s basically a quick walkthrough of making a new character. You can follow the step-by-step process as we did here, but you don’t have to do them in that order. Remember, this is all a work-in-progress, so some things aren’t finished yet and others will undoubtedly change as we continue.

We hope you enjoyed this quick look at the official character builder. We can’t wait to share this with you!
