Level Up: Advanced 5E overhauls almost every aspect of the core 5E rules, making it impossible to list every change. However, the below list includes some of the main highlights.

  • Race is split into heritage and culture, representing traits you inherit from your parents and those you learn from your environment. Members of each heritage choose from two or more heritage gifts, so that not all members of a heritage are the same. This allows a much wider variety of heritage/culture combinations.

  • Traits, bonds, and flaws are replaced with a Destiny such as Revenge, or Wealth.

  • Every class has been overhauled to give meaningful choices at each level and to encompass the exploration and social pillars of play. The monk is now the adept and encompasses a wider range of unarmed characters, and the barbarian is now the berserker and includes a wider range of rage-fueled characters. The marshal is a new leader/supporter type class.

  • New skills include Culture and Engineering. Skill also include skill specialties such as Athletics (swimming).

  • Lots of new weapons, including cultural weapons.

  • Expertise dice add granularity to advantage.

  • Combat includes combat maneuvers which require a saving throw vs. your Maneuver DC. There are basic maneuvers that everybody can do, and more advanced maneuvers that the martial classes can learn.

  • New conditions include rattled, doomed, confused, bloodied, and slowed.

  • Exhaustion is split into fatigue and strife, representing physical and spiritual strain.

  • There’s an entire new exploration pillar including journey rules, exploration challenges, and more.

  • Easy to use rules for strongholds and followers.

  • Extensive downtime activities.

  • Spells sometimes include ‘rare’ versions which can be granted as treasure.

  • Magic items all have prices and crafting components.

  • The core monsters have all been revised and come with extensive tools for their use, including encounterr tables, treasure, behavior tables, signs, names, combat guidelines, and more.
